Spray nozzles are manufactured from a wide variety of materials that have been determined to meet the usual requirements of the applications most commonly associated with that type of nozzle. Standard materials include brass, steel, various stainless steels, hardened stainless steels, many plastics and various carbides. Spray nozzles can also be supplied in other materials upon special request. Materials of construction affect nozzle wear life and resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

The range of flow (typically measured in gallons per minute or liters per minute) published in our catalog for a given nozzle.
> _The catalog offers flow rates only for selected operating pressures so greater flow may be possible at pressures not shown in the catalog._

Liquid Flow Rate Range

Actual drop size (measured in microns) will vary based on flow rate and pressure. The _**“relative”**_ drop size range represents the variation in drop size across typical operating pressures for a particular nozzle.
> _If drop size is critical to your application, contact us for specific information. Relative Drop Size Range

Our products are grouped into these primary product types:
- Nozzle - Body _(a nozzle body without a spray tip)_
- Tip _(a spray tip without a nozzle body)_
- Assembly _(a complete nozzle assembly including both a nozzle body and a spray tip)_

Product Type

The spray angles produced by nozzles vary from 0° for solid stream nozzles up to 180° for select hollow cone nozzles. For ease of product searching, our catalog groups spray angles into “narrow” (typically < 50°), “standard” (50°-100°) and “wide” (> 100°).
> _**Important Note:** Spray angle range for each of the basic spray patterns (flat spray, full cone, hollow cone) varies, so Spray Angle Catalog Group is most useful when searching for nozzles within a single spray pattern._

Spray Angle Catalog Code

Many hydraulic spray nozzles include a numeric capacity size in the part number. Capacity size is often related to the flow rate of the nozzle at the rated spray pressure for that nozzle. For example, the capacity size for a 1/4HH10 FullJet® nozzle is “10”, which reflects a 1.0 gpm flow rate at 10 psi.

Capacity Size

The volume of liquid passing through a nozzle (also called the nozzle’s capacity) is typically measured in gallons per minute or liters per minute. Flow rate is affected by liquid pressure and other factors, including the specific gravity and viscosity of the liquid being sprayed.
> _For more information on liquid flow rate or nozzle capacity, download our [technical reference document](https://spray.widen.net/download/spray/oeafrrites/cat75HYD_us_Tech-Reference_A.pdf) or contact your [local Spraying Systems Co. sales rep](https://www.spray.com/contact/find-a-representative)._

Liquid Flow Rate

Standard hydraulic nozzles range in connection size from 1/8” threaded nozzles up to those with 12” flange connections. Larger connection sizes typically have larger flow rates but a wide variety of configurations are available to meet your application needs.

Inlet Connection Size

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a fluid compared to the density of water. It must be considered to properly calculate flow rate.

**Alternatively**, if you don't know the specific gravity you may select the **Liquid Type** from a list of commonly-sprayed liquids and temperatures.

### Liquid Type

The type of liquid sprayed and its temperature affects the specific gravity of the liquid and in turn affects the flow rate. The default liquid is water, with a specific gravity of 1.

> _For more information on how specific gravity and other characteristics such as temperature, viscosity and surface tension affect spray performance, download our [technical reference document](https://spray.widen.net/download/spray/oeafrrites/cat75HYD_us_Tech-Reference_A.pdf) or contact your [local Spraying Systems Co. sales rep](https://www.spray.com/contact/find-a-representative)._

Actual drop size (measured in microns) will vary based on flow rate and pressure. The _**“relative”**_ drop size range represents the variation in drop size across typical operating pressures for a particular nozzle.

The drop size ranges provided can be characterized as follows:
- 10 to 500 microns: very small drops
(comparable to fog)
- 100 to 500 microns: small drops
(comparable to light rain)
- 500 to 1000 microns: medium drops
(comparable to moderate rain)
- 1000 to 5000 microns: large drops
(comparable to heavy rain)

We offer the _**“brand”**_ filter as a convenience because many Spraying Systems Co. nozzle brand names are recognized by customers around the world, such as VeeJet® flat spray nozzles and FullJet® full cone nozzles. Most of our nozzle brands are registered trademarks in the United States and in other countries around the world.

Different nozzle types are _**“rated”**_ at various pressures, depending on the function of the nozzle and the pressure at which a spray pattern is fully formed. The angle of the spray pattern as it emerges from the nozzle, when spraying at the rated pressure orifice, can serve as a reference point for comparing different nozzles.

Spray Angle at Rated Pressure

The range of operating pressures published in our catalog.
> _The catalog offers flow data only for selected operating pressures. Certain nozzles may be able to operate outside the pressure range shown in the catalog. Consult your local Spraying Systems Co. representative to ensure safe operation._

Liquid Pressure Range

The angle of the spray pattern as it emerges from the nozzle orifice, measured in degrees. Narrower spray angles provide less coverage of the sprayed surface. Wider spray angles provide greater coverage of the sprayed surface. Solid stream nozzles have a 0° spray angle.
> _For more information on spray performance characteristics including spray angle and spray coverage, download our [technical reference document](https://spray.widen.net/download/spray/oeafrrites/cat75HYD_us_Tech-Reference_A.pdf) or contact your [local Spraying Systems Co. sales rep](https://www.spray.com/contact/find-a-representative)._

Liquid Pressure

A nozzle’s spray pattern is the shape the liquid forms after it emerges from the orifice. Nozzles are precision engineered to produce specific spray patterns such as full cone, flat spray, hollow cone and solid stream patterns. Different spray patterns are useful for different types of spray operations.
